Week 27--in which we listen to what wants to be created

Beautiful Ones,

For the past several weeks, Cathy Stevens Pratt and I have been completely immersed in the creation of the 6th of 7 intensives in The Witch Sequence. The title of all these intensives is long but every word matters. Here’s the full name:

The ART of Becoming a Witch
How to Awaken Remember, and Trust
The Memory of Reverence ∞ Devotion

To create one of these intensives, Cathy and I have to listen intently to what wants to be created. Here are some of things we’ve been listening for.

We listen for the correct title

We have been calling the 6th WitchArt Devotion from the beginning. And it is Devotion, but it’s more than Devotion, or perhaps more accurately, devotion has to include reverence. You cannot have devotion without reverence or reverence without devotion.

But when I wrote our the title with the word and linking Reverence with Devotion, it didn’t feel or look right. When I replaced the conjunction with the mobius strip ∞ showing that they are one and the same, the title felt and looked perfect.

I listen for Eterna's name

I’ve had the oracles one-word names for three years, but they always announce their full name as an intensive is approaching. Eterna let me know her full name is “Her Memory of Life.” That name shifted everything we thought we were planning for this intensive.

Cathy had quite the time with Eterna. She simply would not appear in any of the ways previous oracles have. Instead, Eterna began to visit Cathy in dreams. On July 1, Eterna finally emerged on paper. When Cathy sent me the painting, I had a visceral, full-body response. Eterna is alive—fully, cosmically, magnificently alive. She barrels through time and space to awaken the memory of life in us. Eterna truly is Her Memory of Life.

We were startled and thrilled by Eterna’s image. But something else happened that is perhaps even more startling. While Cathy was painting Eterna on July 1, a new interstellar object appeared in space, hurtling past Jupiter and headed to Mars on a massive radical orbit. The object, called 31/ATLAS, is thought to be an icy comet. This got our attention, because whenever Cathy and I tried to imagine Eterna, we found ourselves talking about comets and how odd they are.

Eterna does look a bit like a comet; she even has the split tail, which Cathy did not know is an attribute of a comet. 31/ATLAS is going to leave our Solar System at the end of October—exactly when ART 6 ends. The parallel timing of Eterna’s 77-day guardianship in ART6 and 31/ATLAS’s trajectory sure feels like a cosmic message.

We listen for the content

The ART intensives all last 77 days with 5 Learning Gatherings and 5 Experiential Journeys. So knowing we had this structure, Cathy and I got together often, sometimes daily, to decipher what we would explore in those gatherings. We had some ideas, but the labyrinth wanted to have the last word.

She began by revealing a name we had not heard before—Her Dragon Road—reminding us that this three-and-a-half-year adventure has always been leading to Dragon.

But who or what is Dragon? Although Dragon is the heart of our motto—the song of the dreaming dragon, Dragon has remained a mystery. But now we sense Dragon stirring as she dreams.

We listen to the labyrinth

Then, the labyrinth grabbed my attention and ordered me to look, really look, at the final three circuits. Here is the labyrinth with only the fifth, sixth, and seventh circuits in color.

As I stared, I suddenly understood something that’s been right in front of us all along.

The first four circuits of Intuition, Threshold crossing, Original Prayer, and Myrrhophore Anointing are long circular paths along the outside of the labyrinth. Each one awakens a different gift. It is possible to walk them in any order.

But the final three, Divination, Devotion, and Dragon are short, crescent-shaped paths with tight hairpin turns. They look like a crown resting above the center. In The Witch Sequence, we recognize the center as the Holy Well and the umbilical cord into the womb of the Mother.

As I stared, I suddenly saw that 5,6,7 are really one path, not three.

And I understood what holds them together: Her Libraries of the four sacred elements.

The Libraries became our core prayer in ART 5 on Divination when I read in Max Dashu’s Women in Greek Mythography, that the Oracle of Delphi opened her consultations saying,

“First in my prayer, I call on Earth, primeval prophetess.”

The moment I stumbled upon the Oracles’ original prayer, I felt a new prayer practice to address all four elements rising through me.

We’d never had a prayer anything like that in the ART intensives, but it felt right and necessary to open all four Libraries by calling on Fire, Air, Earth, and Water. We called the whole prayer the Remembering Ceremony. The beauty and power of that prayer inspired Cathy to take us into the Libraries in her Experiential Journeys and guide us to notice the Sigils, the sacred symbols, we had carved on the Library walls lifetimes ago. Those four Sigils became our most important gifts in ART 5.

Staring at the three final circuits, I suddenly realized that, profound as those journeys in ART 5 were, we had only begun to explore the Libraries.

I was startled to realize that in ART 6, we would return to those Libraries, present our Sigils, and use them to open the locked vaults. In those vaults in ART 6, we will receive four sacred seeds that we alone can plant to create Her Garden of Reverence.

We listen to Dragon

We don’t know exactly how, but we sense Dragon is connected with the locked vaults of the Libraries.

At the conclusion of ART 6, Dragon will open the Garden Gate and invite us to plant our seeds to germinate for 130 days until ART 7 opens next Spring. This image sets my heart soaring. Her Garden of Reverence and the call to heal the wasteland is becoming real, tangible, and possible.

After thousands of years of vilification, we witches and wizards, priestesses and shamans arrive determined to shed all the lies that patriarchal religion and culture have told us about who we are and what we are capable of.

We are ready to step fully into our original power as Whole, Intuitive, Threshold-crossing, Creative, Holy witches.
