Does the world feel like it’s shaking? And not just because of the two earthquakes in Venezuela. Those are horrific and got lots of attention in the news, but most of us didn’t realize there was a whole day of seismic activity around the world. Three tectonic plates experienced quakes within 24 hours: Pacific-North American plate, South American-Caribbean plate, and Pacific-Eurasian plate.
That’s most of the world. What does that mean?
Venezuela is a tragedy. And we need to pay attention and send help. But it feels like something bigger than one tragedy. It feels like Mother Earth is somehow mirroring the collapse of so many of our political, financial, governmental, cultural, and religious structures.
We have talked about the collapse of patriarchy for years. But it always felt like something hoped for in an unknown future. Something to imagine. Something to visit in our dreams.
- Is that unknown future making itself known?
- Is that future moving dramatically and quickly into the present?
- And, a wild question, can astrology tell us something about this period of collapse?
- Has humanity experienced something like this before?
- What did the cosmos look like then…what does it look like now?
- How long is collapse going to last?
- And, the biggest question, what is ours to do in a time of collapse?
I think these are the biggest questions I’ve ever pondered!
But I’m not pondering them for the first time. If you’ve paid any attention to astrologers, you’ve noticed that they have been talking about a pattern of chaos and collapse that has been building since well before Covid. That’s over six years.
And now, it seems, every astrologer is not just talking about, but screaming about, seeing something they’ve never seen. Something that has not happened for over six thousand years.
I promised in a Notes from the Field two weeks ago that I would try to encapsulate what Emma Kupu Mitchell shared in a bonus video for Praying in the Dark that she and I recorded on June 17.
I’ve been paying attention to Emma and her wisdom on both shamanic astrology and depth numerology for over a decade. Both astrology and numerology are complex symbolic languages. And both, along with the Chinese Lunar Year symbolism of the Fire Horse, are all coming together (can we say conspiring) to initiate a time of collapse.
Does the word collapse frighten you?
It’s actually a word and a reality you see and use and live out all the time.
- Consider that before you can have a shiny new kitchen, you have to take out the old flooring, counters, cabinets, appliances.
- Before you can build a new house, you have to demolish what was on the land that is decrepit, non-functional, falling apart.
- Before you can start a new job, you have to stop working the old one.
- Before you can welcome a new relationship, you have to walk away from the old, especially if it was decrepit, non-functional, falling apart. (Been there done that. Wasn’t pretty, but oh it was necessary. And so freeing.)
Writers know this particularly well.
Before you can begin a new writing project, you have to let your old ideas, your old formats, your old concepts, and sometimes even your old books go. I went through this dramatically and painfully when I got the contract for Writing Down Your Soul in 2006 and had to stop working on Spiritual Geography, a project I loved. I had to leave it unfinished in order to give my undivided attention to not just a new book, but what emerged as a whole new life as a writer. A decision I am so so grateful I made.
And then, when prayer artist arrived in 2018, I knew at the deepest, and once again painful, gut level that I had to change not just the books I wrote, but everything I taught and how I taught it. I had to let my radio show go and my old website. I had to announce I was no longer teaching courses related to my books; I was only offering prayer intensives.
It was a seismic shift. My personal mini-earthquake.
As you read this, do you see that you too have experienced earthquakes, seismic shifts, closing doors, and demolitions. And come through them, no matter how painful, to discover that you have strengths and abilities you didn’t know you had.
If this is true of individual lives, could it also be true of the entire family of humanity?
Could this be the shakeup we have been hoping for? Could we be standing on the threshold of a time of collapse, when the structures of patriarchy that have inflicted so much suffering, crumble around us? Could this be a sacred moment to let what is decrepit, non-functional, and falling apart go? And if it is, is the cosmos supporting us in creating something new, holy, and beautiful, not for the few, but for all—human, plant, animal—who share life on this exquisite blue planet.
Listening to Emma as she explained the astrology of the summer of 2026, the summer of our collapse, I didn’t feel afraid. I felt inspired, lifted, alive with possibility.
You’ll want to listen to her entire video on the resource page for Praying in the Dark, and study her slides, and read articles by other astrologers about this summer of collapse, but here are my primary take-aways:
- We’re in a 1 year, initiating a whole new 9 year cycle, perfect moment for new beginnings
- The Fire Horse is announcing rapid fiery change
- On Feb 20, 2026, the changes began when Saturn and Neptune met at 0 degrees of Aries, the most fertile point in the entire zodiac
- All the outer planets are dissolving, crumbling
- There is a magic triangle being formed by Pluto, Uranus and the Neptune that calls us to embrace rapid change
- The culmination of all this change is happening in the 2nd week of July, July 17-22
- And then, the icing on this quake-cake: Pluto is going out of bounds in August, South of his usual elliptic path.
South matters. When he goes South big changes happen that are POSITIVE for humanity. Historically, when Pluto has gone out of bounds North of his elliptic, world wars break out. He’s going to continue to go South of his path for several months a year for a decade!
As I listened to Emma and looked at the calendar, I had to laugh.
Although Cathy and I did not plan Praying in the Dark to open on Tuesday July 14, the week all these planets dance into a configuration to support collapse, we must have somehow intuited that something big was going to happen.
Proving, once again, that astrology is not some esoteric thing happening out there that we need to try to intellectually understand. Astrology is alive. And it is happening in us, because we are part of the cosmos. As above, so below.
Look at Cathy’s timeline, a timeline she’s worked on for over a month. We are standing in the moment of collapse. The tower is literally falling.
But—and this is important—our attention isn’t on the dark.
It isn’t on fear. It isn’t on panic. Our attention is on the beautiful unknown. The green possibility. The time we call Her Garden of Reverence. The time we are here to pray into being.
So no wonder we are gathering In Praying in the Dark: How Visionaries Pray in a Time of Collapse for four weeks, starting right in the peak month of the summer of our collapse, to pray in a whole new, totally non-patriarchal and wildly creative way.

Because, as the astrology shows, the time of collapse doesn’t end this summer.
- According to several astrologers, peak collapse is happening through 2028
- Then there will be two or more years of creation, construction of a new way of living
- After that there will be long periods of integration and stabilization
