How to write a prayer on this last New Moon of the year

2024 a year of sacred memory, dreaming dragons, and original prayer

Week 10--in which we step into the final New Moon of this astrological year and welcome a prayer to get us dancing around a lovely pagan fire

Friends, soul writers, mystics, witches, and lovers of prayer,

Today, Sunday, March 10, is the final New Moon of the astrological year that began last March 21 and ends April 8. This last new moon is in Pisces, the final sign of the zodiac.

I want to honor this final cycle by creating a special prayer. Because this last New Moon feels important. It’s some kind of preparation. A passageway, I sense.

A passageway that carries us right to April 8, when we’ll step into a very dramatic New Moon at Aries at 19° 24’ that will initiate a whole new astrological year.

When a new astrological year begins, I take time to feel into a new Lunar Vow for the new Lunar Year. Then, I speak that prayer aloud every day as I begin my deep soul writing.

This is how I bless my deep soul writing pages. I speak my Solar and my Lunar Vow prayers every day.

Those two prayers make a difference. The words falling on my skin each morning awaken something fresh. They revitalize me. Charm me. I cannot speak these two prayers without smiling, laughing, sometimes shouting with joy. The day is different because I speak those two prayers.

I talk about how to create a new Solar Vow on January 1st each year in The Lotus and the Lily. And come April, I’ll be talking about how to create a new Lunar Year vow.

The coming Astrological Year is going to be dramatic. It will arrive on the wings of a Total Solar Eclipse. That combination is radical and rare. My sister witch and collaborator in The Witch Sequence intensives, Cathy Stevens Pratt, lives in Vermont, very near the totality of that Solar Eclipse. So, Cathy is going to bring the members of ART 3, our current intensive on Original Prayer, into the totality via zoom.

I’ve never experienced totality, nor has Cathy, so we have no idea what it will feel like. But my gut knows that this Total Eclipse is birthing something beyond whatever we can imagine or conjecture. Something very big awaits. And it is going to ask much of us. So I want to get ready.

So this weekend, I am going to stop and really tune into this final New Moon of the astrological year that is ending and listen, really listen, to receive a prayer that helps me complete this lunar year with love and joy and open my heart and body to the year to come.

I’d like to share how I do it with you, so that if my process speaks to you, you can create your own year-ending, year-welcoming lunar prayer.

In short, here’s what I do each New Moon.

Note: This is a tiny introduction. I’m crafting a full mini-intensive on how to create your own lunar prayer which I’m calling My Lunar Dream. I’ll announce when it’s ready in a May newsletter.

  1. Jot down and review everything that happened in the last lunar cycle, February 9 to March 9
  2. Read the Chandra in Inside Degrees by Ellias Lonsdale for the Lunar Cycle that began on February 9. Notice parallels between the oracle and what actually happened. This is always a major AHA moment. (The Chandra for the cycle that began on February 9 was Aquarius 21.)
  3. Note any treasures you want to carry into this final cycle and then on into the new astrological year to come.
  4. Note the feelings, stories, behaviors, etc that you do not want to continue to carry. Write the things you are leaving behind on paper and ceremonially bury or burn or place in the garbage.
  5. Then, read the Chandra for the Pisces New Moon initiating this final lunar cycle of the year. It's Pisces 21.

In case you don’t have the book, here it is.

Read this slowly and aloud. Several times. Let the images and feelings it evokes wash over you. Do not try to “figure it out.” It’s an oracle, a message from the mystery. You can only sense its meaning and magic by living through it.

Pagan fire worshippers dancing

Trance states. At home in psychic realms and other realities. The self abandoned to the tribe—to the sweep of the moment, to the energies that arise. On fire with longing and poignant, bittersweet reflections.

A throwback, a native, a primal soul. Emotional, depths-centered, superphysical, you are energized tremendously by special occasions, extraordinary meetings, unexpected miracles and tragedies.

Expectant and waiting for something wild and unknown to break through. Mediumistic, vicarious, and charged with a life-force that must be followed out. A certain distinctive fate to be at times disappearing and gone and at other times resurgent and mighty—all depend upon the tides of fortune.

And it will always change in unpredictable, exciting, disorienting, and multiple ways.

In honor of the pagan fire worshipper dancing around the fire, I think I’ll light a candle and dance around it a bit as I read this aloud. And then, sit down for some deep soul writing to receive a prayer for this year-ending Pisces cycle.

There is no set way to receive your prayer.

  • But you might begin by noticing words or phrases or ideas that leap off this oracle and grab your attention.
  • For me, for example, the sentence, “expectant and waiting for something wild and unknown to break through” feels major. So I’ll say it aloud a few times.
  • Stare out the window a bit.
  • Then put your pen down and begin to play with how a prayer might sound that welcomes the wild and unknown to break through between now and April 9.

My Pisces Lunar Cycle prayer might arrive in one fell swoop or it might emerge in bits. I know not to rush it or try to force a particular idea into a prayer form. I know this because THE most important definition and truth about prayer is the Great Mystery of Prayer:

You are not praying; you are being prayed.
Prayed at the speed of love.

Once you have your prayer for this final lunar cycle, say it every day. Keep revisiting it in deep soul writing. You may not know what you have written today, but it knows! It knows the gifts it wants to give you.

Have a delicious Pisces New Moon and may this final cycle, in what has been an astrological year full of witch wonders, dance you right up to the dark mystery of the new astrological year to come.
