What is The 15 Mysteries of Joan of Arc prayer intensive?
On May 30, 1431 the Catholic Church with the collusion of the English army and the French government burnt a 19-year-old girl alive. Now known as Joan of Arc, she was the youngest general of any gender in history. She had performed both military and political miracles—liberating the besieged city of Orleans and crowning the Dauphin king of France. The soldiers who fought beside Joan were ready to die for her. Women brought her their stillborn babies to revive. As her body turned to ash in the flames, her executioner began to weep and afterwards all present swore they saw a dove rise from the pyre into the heavens. Joan’s mother spent the rest of her life fighting to have her daughter’s reputation exonerated.
Over the centuries Joan of Arc has ignited devotion and inspired the imagination of people all around the world. Mark Twain, an atheist, spent the last years of his life writing about her. George Bernard Shaw, a social critic and nonbeliever, created his greatest play as a testament to her. Whenever we see a teenage girl of incalculable courage in the face of violence and empire, we know we recognize her spirt.
But who was Joan of Arc? Why was she so dangerous to men in power then? Why has she compelled the attention of artists, playwrights, novelists, poets, movie directors, and actors for six hundred years? And, of greatest importance, why is she returning now?
In this prayer intensive, a mystical exploration like no other, we will meet the real Joan of Arc as we sit in sacred circle with Perdita Finn, who is devoted to Joan and committed to elucidating who this most beloved woman was—and is—and Janet Conner, who, under Joan’s direction is creating The Return of the Witches Jeanne d’Arc Listening Novena opening in June.
A sampling of the questions we will explore together through story, prayer, conversation, deep listening, and soul writing:
What mysteries are revealed in Joan’s many names?
Why was the church desperate to kill her?
Why did it take the church 590 years to saint her? Why did they finally do it?
What did the illiterate peasants of the day think about her?
Who did they whisper that she was?
What does the mysterious appearance of her sword reveal?
What is the “hidden in plain sight” meaning of her banner?
How was Joan connected to the Cathars?
What connects her to Mary Magdalene?
Who were her voices?
What was her devotion to the Black Madonna?
How is her story connected to the Grail story?
What is her connection to the great Goddesses of old?
Hidden within Joan’s life are fifteen mysteries that mirror the ancient mysteries of Isis and Osiris, Demeter and Persephone, Miriam and Yeshua. Together we will explore them and let Joan, Jehanne as she called herself, initiate us into wonders, magic, courage beyond measure, and the possibility of the Great Goddess returned.
In perfect timing, our closing gathering on Sunday May 30th is Joan of Arc’s feast day, the anniversary of her death. And The Return of the Witches Jeanne d’Arc Listening Novena opens with a sacred ceremony led by Sabin Bailey 5 days later on Friday, June 4.
