The meaning hiding in plain sight in your birthday

2024 a year of sacred memory, dreaming dragons, and original prayer

Week 22--in which we explore the meaning hiding in plain sight in your birthday

Friends, soul writers, mystics, witches, and lovers of prayer,

What do you prior to your birthday? We’re raised to celebrate the day with cake and presents, but until I met Emma Kupu Mitchell and learned a bit about numerology, it never crossed my mind to spend time looking back at the year I’ve just lived. But when Emma dropped into my life, she brought her interest in Pythagorean numerology, and completely changed how I prepare for and celebrate my birthday.

I thought you might enjoy looking at your own birthday through the numerology lenses of Life Path, Essence, and Creativity by Decades.

Plus receive a gift from Joan Baez.

Life Path

If you’ve been reading these Notes from the Field for a while, you know how to determine your life path from your birthday. If not, it’s easy. Simply write out all the single digits of your birthday and add them up. My birthday, for example, is June 16 and I was born in 1948.

So, I add: 6 + 1 + 6 + 1 + 9 + 4 + 8 = 35
Then, reduce: 3 + 5 = 8

Most people just look at the final number, in my case an 8. And eight, in general, is looked upon as the number of success. But I like to step back and look at how the 8 is achieved. Because it could have been a 26/8 or a 44/8 or a 17/8, right? Dan Millman’s book The Life You Were Born to Live is a deep dive into a fuller story of your life path. The 3 and the 5 show me how to attain success.

In his system, my 8 arrives when I focus on:
3 = creativity
5 = discipline

Talk about accurate! It took me until I turned fifty, but once I committed to living a focused disciplined life of creativity, doors started flying open, and still do. I love my 35/8 life.

But knowing and exploring the life path your soul chose when she selected a particular day to arrive is just Soul Story 101. There are two other rich aspects I’d like to share with you.

Essence Numerology

In her depth numerology training, Emma learned how to calculate someone’s Essence number. Your Essence is the unique energy infusing each year of your life. It’s the story of your life in numbers. What’s so interesting about your Essence is that although it is a number, it is calculated based on the letters in your name. The name your soul selected for this lifetime (and yes, your soul chose your name, just as she chose your birth date) is filled with evocative numeric information.

The ancients called it gematria. Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, and other sacred sound languages were seen as holding layers of information, much of it cradled in the invisible numbers in the words. My introduction to the hidden vibration of numbers in words was Margaret Starbird’s Magdalene’s Lost Legacy: Symbolic Numbers and the Sacred Union in Christianity. When I read Magdalene’s Lost Legacy in 2014, it completely blew my mind. No wonder we can’t understand sacred texts translated into English; we aren’t seeing what the original writers were communicating.

So when Emma offered to do my Essence chart, I was all in. And, oh my Goddess, has knowing my Essence ever changed my life. I’ve told the story many times in these newsletters, but here’s a mini version. During our annual pre-birthday Essence conversation in 2017, Emma said I was entering a year like no other—my one and only Essence 8. Now, I rather like 8, so I perked up, excited to hear about the possibilities.

But as the conversation was ending Emma said, “By your next birthday in 2018, you will be a completely different person.”

This scared me. I rather liked the life I was living as a spiritual writer, teacher, and radio host. But, as you might know, on February 24, 2018, I was awakened hearing prayer artist in my left ear. I didn’t know what that meant, but I said yes anyway.

Before my yes was dry on the page, I received the first of what turned out to be a whole new genre of prayer as love songs. Three weeks later, I announced I would no longer teach my courses so I could begin to offer prayer intensives. Next, I closed my radio show to create a podcast on prayer. Finally, I began to completely rework my website to focus on prayer and prayer intensives. Emma was right. When my 70th birthday rolled around, I was a completely different person. And, more creative and happier than I’d ever been.

My annual Essence conversation with Emma is next Thursday. I’ve been preparing for quite a while. Emma teaches that the month prior to your birthday is the richest time to pause, reflect, look back at the year ending. Without fail, as I review, I find patterns and messages, surprises and jewels that weren’t obvious while I was busy living.

I’m particularly excited about this Essence consultation because I’m at a major crossroad.

I am completing three years of an Essence 20. When Emma introduced me to my three-year Essence 20 walk in June of 2021, I had just created The Return of the Witches, a very unusual intensive to meet 13 witches covering three thousand years and half the globe. I didn’t realize it at the time, but The Return of the Witches was the beginning of a long deep relationship with the original meaning of the word witch. That intensive (now available On Demand) awakened something in me and in the eighty-five people who walked that witch path with me.

I knew something big was happening, something I didn’t intellectually understand, so I decided to dive into the mystery of 20. And there’s no better place for that than the mystical Tarot. In the Thoth deck, 20 is the number of The Aeon. And when reduced, 20 is the highest expression of 2 The High Priestess. In The Tarot Handbook, Angeles Arrien describes 20 as the ability to:

  • see the long history
  • give birth to new forms
  • explore new ways of living in new kinds of communities
  • create whole new ways of working in collaboration

That is a rather perfect description of my life creating all my witch events especially The Witch Sequence. This massive 7-intensive event is only possible because I work in intense collaboration with artist, oracle, dragon whisperer, and journey guide, Cathy Stevens Pratt.

I’ve loved every minute of my three-year mystic Aeon community walk of love. But now I’m stepping into a new three-year period. My Essence until June of 2026 will be a 19. I’ll learn about 19 in my consultation with Emma, but I know this much already: 19 is the fourth and final Pythagorean karmic number. Nineteen holds the energy of surrender. Complete surrender. What does this kind of surrender look or feel like? What does it mean to live in a state of sacred surrender? I don’t know. I sense I’ve been preparing for this for a long long time, but I won’t fully unwrap 19 and the magic of surrender until I’ve walked it for three years.

I don’t think it’s an accident that in June of 2026, just as I take my last steps with surrender, we will have just completed the 7 and final prayer intensive in The Witch Sequence—Dragon!

Most Creative Decades

Here’s another take on the meaning hiding in numbers. I stumbled upon an article a few weeks ago stating that your most creative decade is your 60s, followed by your 70s, and your third most creative decade is your fifties.

Are you as surprised by this data as I was? But, when I looked back, my most creative decade was my 60s. My first book Writing Down Your Soul came out as I was turning 60 and by the time that decade ended, I had written seven books and thousands had come to my courses. It was such a rich decade, that I felt trepidation approaching 70. How could my 70s possibly be more creative and delightful than my 60s.

Boy, was I in for a surprise!

Witch arrived (via an endorsement from Rabbi Tirzah Firestone) the summer I turned 70. And a whole new mystical exploration began. I’m still in my 70’s but thus far, I’d have to say this decade is even more delightful and creative than my 60s.

I think the numeric vibration of the numbers 5, 6, and 7 might hold some clues to why this is so.

5 is the number of change
Sacred change, divinely directed change, the presence of the sacred feminine. And my fifties were a decade of complete change. I entered my 50s in a toxic marriage doing toxic work and came out of my 50s a writer. Massive changes indeed!

6 is the number of love
It’s The Lovers in Tarot. But this love expresses itself in service. When Emma introduces a number, she suggests we begin by drawing the number and feeling and seeing its meaning in its shape. Go ahead. Make a six. What do you see? A pregnant woman of course! Throughout my sixties, I was always pregnant with deep soul writing, soul vows, and all my books and courses. It was absolutely a decade of birthing loving service.

7 is the number of the mystic
It is the drive for wisdom, knowledge, and spiritual completion. And it requires quiet and peace. (I don’t think I could come up with a better short description of my life and work in my 70s!)

Do you see the pattern I see?

  • My 50s were the necessary upheaval to shed my old life and begin to live the life I came here to live
  • My 60s were all about birthing my spiritual writing life
  • My 70s are all about the joys and radical insights of the mystical life

What decade are you in? Does the number of the decade hold any clues to the story unfolding in your life?

I have much more to share about the numerology hiding in your birthday. I’ll tell the story next Sunday of the revelations surfacing as I walk an ancient 7-circuit labyrinth for each year of my life.

But for now I leave you with two things:

  1. My once-a-year massive sale of all my On Demand events continues for just two more weeks. It ends on June 16.

Click on the link, peruse all the On Demand intensives, select any or all you wish, and enter the coupon code birthday to receive an additional 22% off.

  2. And this final gift from a queen of creativity Joan Baez. She kicked off her new book tour with a Writers Bloc Presents interview with Justin Richmond. I loved every moment of the interview (you can find it on youtube). But she said one thing that flew off the screen and landed in my deep soul writing page. She said:

I do not choose my songs.
    My songs choose me.

A question to ponder: What songs are choosing you right now?

I know the songs choosing me. They are the songs of the whole and holy witches. And it is my honor in my 7th decade to bring them to life.

Here's the link to my intensives. Perhaps there is a  song waiting to choose you in these radical holy events.
