The mysterious reset hiding in the Aries Equinox

2024 a year of sacred memory, dreaming dragons, and original prayer

Week 11--in which we pause at the Equinox to reset the past and glimpse the radical future to come

Friends, soul writers, mystics, witches, and lovers of prayer,

Tuesday is the Aries Equinox—the beginning of spring in the Northern hemisphere and fall in the Southern. I confess that until The Witch Sequence came along, I didn’t pay a lot of attention to the Equinoxes. I knew the word equinox means equal, referring to the equal length of day and night, but beyond that I didn’t give it much attention. I was more interested in the Solstices when the day is longest or shortest. Those seemed more dramatic and powerful.

But I was wrong. Oh, so very wrong.

When The Witch Sequence landed on my doorstep last Spring, it came with the surprising announcement that there are 7 original WitchArt gifts. And we awaken and remember each one as we walk one of the 7 circuits of the original feminine womb labyrinth. And we walk each circuit in a prayer intensive that lasts 77 days. And—surprise!—the 7 gifts match the chakras. The command to notice all the recurring and interwoven sevens and their mystical meaning was intense and detailed and really non-negotiable.

But there was one more piece that left me scratching my head.

We would meet for those 77 days centered around the two Equinoxes. One prayer intensive in the Spring, one in the Fall.

So here we are, midway through the prayer intensive on Original Prayer, our 3rd WitchArt gift, and we are approaching the Aries Equinox when the sun enters Aries, the first sign of the zodiac at 0°, and the whole celestial story begins again.

This year the Aries Equinox happens on Tuesday, March 19 at 8:06pm Pacific, 11:06pm Eastern, and early Wednesday, March 20 in Ireland, UK, Europe and beyond.

Because the Equinoxes are the central heartbeat of our 7 prayer intensives in The Witch Sequence, my sister-witch and collaborator, Cathy Stevens Pratt, and I have had to dive deep into the ancient wisdom of the Equinox. Wisdom our ancestral witches knew and celebrated, but we moderns have lost in time.

To help us create a magical experience for this Tuesday’s Equinox Celebration, (open only to the members of ART 3), I’ve been immersing myself in all the sources I can find for the ancient truth about this sacred turning point in the wheel of the year.

My go-to source is always my shamanic astrologer and depth numerologist buddy, Emma Kupu Mitchell. Earlier this month, I went to one of her Wheel of the Year creative journaling gatherings. When the gathering opened, Emma began to talk about Equinox in language I’d not noticed before.

Emma said Equinox is a reset. Equinox recalibrates the earth into right relationship.

She advised us to explore what it means to be in “right relationship” with ourselves, our purpose in life, our sense of responsibility and stewardship.

As she talked, I reached for Inside Degrees, thinking it might be helpful to read the Chandra for the vernal Equinox which is always at Aries 00°. There is no Chandra for 0 so the first Chandra is Aries 1.

I opened my well-loved book and was surprised to see that I had visited Aries 1 before. I was there this time last year on March 21, 2023, when Aries 1 was the Chandra not just for the Vernal Equinox but for the entire new Astrological Year.

On the day of the new astrological year (the first New Moon after the Vernal Equinox), I always write a Lunar Vow that I then speak aloud every day throughout the astrological year, along with my Solar Vow. Speaking these two prayers sanctifies the pages of my soul writing journal and throws the door open to invite my divine Voice to speak.

When I studied this Aries 1 Chandra last March 21, I underlined words and phrases that felt important to me.

The big phrase for me was “become a hardy vessel for strong Earth usage.” I underlined hardy vessel and circled it, and sure enough those words became my Lunar Vow:

“I am ready. Make of me a hardy vessel for my Mother’s Garden of Reverence.”

I said that Lunar prayer on March 21, intending to say it for the whole astrological year, but that’s not what happened.

Cathy and I opened the first Witch Sequence prayer intensive on March 26, just a few days after I wrote that prayer. Mind you, we didn’t know it was the first of seven intensives. We thought it was a stand alone intensive on intuition. But about three weeks in, we began to see that intuition was the first of 7 sacramental gifts, and we actually had our feet on the first path in a 7-circuit original labyrinth. That’s when and how The Witch Sequence was born.

So my short “hardy vessel” prayer gave birth to a much bigger “hardy vessel” that I could imagine at the time. The words morphed into what is now our foundational prayer for the entire Witch Sequence. I love love love this prayer! It begins:

  • “Our Lady Queen of Magicians, you have shown us the blueprint—The Witch Sequence.
  • You have whispered the purpose—to heal the wasteland…”
  • and goes on to name our seven original WitchArt gifts: intuition, threshold crossing, original prayer, myrrhophore anointing, divination, devotion, dragon
  • and closes with “ours once, ours once again, ours always.”

A hardy vessel indeed! So hardy it can hold seven 77-day intensives and the memory of 7 powerful WitchArts. And to think, that Lunar prayer, inspired by the Aries 1 Chandra, started it all.

As I remembered all this, I felt a sudden “wait a minute” rising to the surface. I asked Emma: is this possible?

Is it possible that the Chandra for the Aries Equinox coming this Tuesday is the same Chandra for the entire astrological year that’s ending?

Emma thought for a moment. It’s rare, she said. And it’s rare in two ways.

  • First, it is rare to have the Equinox and new astrological year at the same degree
  • Second, a very rare thing happened last year there were TWO concurrent Aries New Moons. The first on March 21 at Aries 00° 49’ and the second on April 19 at Aries 29° 50’.
  • Two Aries New Moons in a row, she said, was a reset.

I remember Emma making a big deal of these two Aries New Moons in a row last year, but it didn’t register until now just what a big deal it was.

And here we are on the cusp of the Aries Equinox which is always the moment the sun slips into 00° Aries. But this year, we also have the opportunity to revisit that same mystical Chandra and work with it to prepare us for the radical new astrological year coming on April 8.

Radical you ask? Is that hyperbole? No, it will be radical. And to make that clear, it arrives with a total Solar Eclipse.

So everything between now and April 8 is preparation. Preparation for a massive reset that, as one astrologer wrote today, is going to “rock our world.”

To help you revisit this reset, and start your own preparation for the new astrological year, I thought you might like to read the Aries 1 Chandra. Whether you studied it last March 21, and perhaps even wrote a Lunar prayer, or are now discovering it for the first time, you might consider reading this on the Equinox and taking it into deep soul writing to probe what the year ending has really been about and how you can begin to prepare for a radical new astrological year arriving on April 8.

Aries 1

A man repairing and extending a stone wall in the spring

Objective Earth existence embraced with a fury. Identifying yourself completely with physical capability, external results, and quantifiable criteria on all fronts. You willfully submerge yourself in the brute facts and the bare phenomena. There is a virtue in this approach. You become ready and quite able to do what is asked or needed and to put nothing in the way of each next thing happening, right on schedule. You actually become a hardy vessel for strong Earth usage. It is a form of penance or probation for past excesses, now gravitating toward the straight and narrow and trying to get certain things straight for a brand new start. It is the initial phase, the radically new cycle taken up with a passion, with an omnivorous appetite for things to do, problems to solve, worlds to streamline. Tremendous or activating will; intended for nothing else.

Inside Degrees, Ellias Lonsdale

Looking back at all that Cathy and I have created in the last 12 months, since I had the audacity to say, “I am ready” and ask to become “a hardy vessel for my Mother’s Garden of Reverence,” I see now how The Witch Sequence was a natural response to my prayer. Last March, I didn’t understand what the odd image of “a man repairing and extending a stone wall” but I think I do now!
