Your questions about deep soul writing

Week 20--in which I address some of your most frequent questions about soul writing

Beautiful Ones,

Before I dive into sharing the questions I have received since I began teaching deep soul writing in 2008, let me say, or more accurately shout—THANK YOU!

I am floored and honored and humbled by the astonishing response to last Sunday’s Notes from the Field announcement that Deep Soul Writing with Friends is open.

In just seven days, we jumped to 55 members in 5 countries, 16 US states, and 2 Canadian provinces. And many of you are bringing friends who’ve never been in an intensive.

We open Tuesday June 3, 6-8pm Eastern—a time that works well for the Americas and Pacific Rim. But because we have members around the world, I will also host a Watch Party on Thursdays in June from 1-3pm Eastern which is more convenient for friends in Europe: 6p UK, 7p EU, 8p Eastern Europe.

Everything is recorded so don’t be concerned if you can’t join us for either of those gatherings. Schedule and details on the Deep Soul Writing with Friends page. Link below.

Here are a few questions you might have about the intensive and about deep soul writing. Some of these questions I’ve heard for years and others are just now surfacing, perhaps in response to the chaos swirling around all of us.

What’s the difference between journaling and deep soul writing?

In a word: Theta.

Theta is the all-important, creative brainwave state. Did you know that theta is the only brainwave state in which you have access to creativity, breakthrough ideas, whole brain thinking, holistic sense of wholeness, inventions, music, mystical experiences, and so much more.

Everything that makes life startling and delightful is available in theta.

The funny part about being such an advocate for theta today, is that for the first ten years of deep soul writing, I had no idea I was dropping into the theta brainwave state as I wrote. I just knew that if I showed up every day, addressed my writing to someone or something, and asked questions, something surprising and helpful would happen.

After chewing over whatever was happening in my life, and coming to a dead end or swimming in confusion, I would ask a question. And voila! An answer would flow through my pen.

Or, if not exactly an answer—a response.

A response I was not expecting. A response I might not even want. So I knew without a doubt that those responses were not coming from me. I wasn’t sure exactly where they were coming from, but I absolutely knew they were real and important and I could trust them.

It was only in 2007, as I was interviewing experts for insights into why deep soul writing was so effective, that I learned about brainwaves.

I tell the story in the chapter on “Why Write” in Writing Down Your Soul.

As I described asking a question and writing so quickly that the pen and the paper practically merged, the consciousness coach I was interviewing said, “I don’t know how you’ve done it, Janet, but you’ve trained yourself to enter mystical theta.”

And now, the heart of everything I offer, everything, is about how to get into the mystical theta brainwave state. Not just while writing, but all the time. A topic we'll explore in Deep Soul Writing with Friends.

But it all begins with deep soul writing—the easiest, fastest way to drop into theta.

So our first big topic in Deep Soul Writing with Friends is “Your brain on theta.” There’s been a lot of brain science since 2007, and all of it substantiates the power and necessity of accessing theta.

Who is the Voice?

In a word: Mystery

In 1997 I picked up a pen and wrote “Dear God.” So, although I didn’t plan it or understand it, I was doing two things by writing “Dear ___.”

I was announcing that I wanted to exit conscious mind and I was shifting my attention to the sacred.

Mind you, I didn’t know that’s what I was doing. It was more instinctual than considered. But ever since, I have addressed the Voice by some kind of sacred name. In 2014, I tried to write “Dear God” and my hand would not cooperate. Out came, “Beloved Vibration of Sophia,” and in that moment my life and my understanding of the sacred was completely upended. The divine for me has been feminine ever since.

But it’s not for me to tell you who or what your personal Voice name is.

My only rule (I’m not big in the rule department, but this one is nonnegotiable) is that you address the Voice by name. I wrote a fun chapter about it called, “Who or What is listening?”

In an early Writing Down Your Soul class, a woman asked why I said to address the Voice by name. She said she didn’t. (And she was a famous journaling coach with a worldwide following.)

I said, “Well, who are you talking to when you journal?” She answered, “The me who knows.”

I swallowed hard and took a risk.

I said, “For the next week, would you do an experiment? Write out across the top of your page, ‘Dear Me who knows.” We gathered a week later and I asked how the experiment went. I braced for her answer. All she said was, “Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god.” That is the best confirmation of the rule “address the voice by name” I can give you.

Developing an intimate living relationship with your personal sacred voice is the great joy of deep soul writing. That’s why our second gathering is all about the Voice. And we’re going to play with what happens when we change the Voice’s Name!

How do I invite friends?

In a word: register (I’ll handle it from there)

When you register, I can see by the rate you chose if you are bringing friends. If you are, I’ll send you an email asking for your friend's name, location, and email. I’ll set them up in my Outlook group so they get all the emails and you don’t have to forward anything.

It’ll be such fun to have someone to share the adventure of deep soul writing with.

How long with the intensive be available?

In a word: Years

Over the years, my web person and I notice when an intensive is ready to retire because no one is purchasing it or visiting the Resource Page. My website is large, so she reminds me that I have to remove old pages.

When it’s time, I announce which older intensives are on sale and when they will be deleted. Intensives from before 2021 are gone.

As I said in last Sunday’s newsletter, this will be the last time I offer deep soul writing this decade, so my intention is to keep Deep Soul Writing with Friends available for at least three years, probably more.

I know you have more questions, and I’m happy to answer some of them next Sunday.

For now, come visit the information and registration page and join our global community.

Please don’t wait till the last minute, because you want time to peruse all the bonuses and gifts, read or reread Writing Down Your Soul, and of course, get yourself a delicious new journal.
